STRIKE

4 July 2008 No Comment

COSATU has called for Protest Action which will take the form of a Strike on Wednesday the 9th July 2008.  This will effect businesses in KZN, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.  It is highly likely that public transport, including taxi’s will not be operating on this day.

We suggest that you adopt a proactive approach and call for a  meeting today or tomorrow with your Shop Steward’s and ask them the following questions:

  1. Are they aware of the possible strike action on Wednesday the 9th July 2008?
  2. What are their intentions on that day?
  3. If they say they are going to participate then ask them if they have considered the effect it will have on the  business?
    Explain to them the effect on the business.
  4. Are they prepared to discuss the matter with you in an attempt to reach the agreed option?
    If they say yes, consider making the following options to them:

(i) that you close your factory on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and they will receive no pay for three days;

(ii) Alternatively the Shop Stewards can attend the protest march in town and the other workers will work and the Shop Steward’s will also be paid.
